ARTIST STATEMENT:

I recorded the piece “Growing Home” to reflect the actions of children reaching up to follow their human examples. You will notice as you hear it that there is always a fall after the melody reaches up, rising as if trying to become more than it is. This step is often replaced by a monotony in the chorus, indicating the return of life to a normality that seems difficult to escape. This cyclical trait is true throughout this short piece. Falls always accompany its rises.

It seems this is the way of history, the way of the smallest qualities of family life, and the way of human life. When we look behind us, it is clear that we are a world always failing our children and those we love most. Adults are so often looking only after themselves, and children are looking up to them. I should hope that the imperfections in this song and in my practice of it are not overlooked; through them I hope to create an image of a child trying to learn this song of the world, making mistakes, and trying to meet human expectations. Looking in all the wrong places for hope and fulfillment.
